Adult Basic Learning Examination (ABLE) Harcourt Education Measurements (800) 211-8378

Purpose: To measure several basic education skills of adults.

Approach: Norm-referenced, structural test.

Target population: Normed on 3,500 adults in 132 programs in 41 states; more than half were of minority racial/ethnic groups.

Administration: Can be administered individually or to groups. No specific admin requirements or training are needed for purchase.

Test length/contraints: It is not a timed test. Most students complete each section within about 30 minutes.

Comments: The ABLE is a battery of tests that measures the general grade level of adults who have not completed l2 years of schooling. There is also a version of the ABLE that tests for adults who have had at least 8 years of school, but have not graduated. The ABLE tests learners for vocabulary, reading comprehension, spelling, number operations, and problem solving. There are 3 levels of the instrument; each level contains five or six sections. There are 2 equivalent forms for each level. Grade Level Equivalents (GLEs) were determined by correlating ABLE scores with Stanford Achievement Test (SAT) scores.
