1. Is there research on the optimum learning group size for basic literacy students? (A paraphrase of a question posted in a message to NIFL-FOBASICS on June 7, 2005 by Marie Keane.)
David Rosen posted a response on the NIFL FOBASICS list, June 7th, 2005. You can read the full post by going to http://www.nifl.gov/lincs/discussions/nifl-fobasics/focus_on_basics.html and selecting Read Posted Messages 2005. Briefly, he said:
The Massachusetts Department of Education has a guideline on an optimum range of learning group size for basic literacy students. It is 7-15 learners. You will find this at: http://www.doe.mass.edu/acls/rfp/classsize_hours.html. The guidelines were first developed nearly two decades ago using extensive practitioner input. As far as I know, over the years practitioners have found these reasonable and effective.
