GED General Education Development Examination is an alternative method for adults over the age of 18 to receive a certificate that is the equivalent of a high school diploma. Only specially sanctioned test centers administer the GED. There is a fee to take the examination which varies by test center. To pass the examination the student must receive passing scores, which vary slightly by region, in five subjects: mathematics, social studies, reading, writing, and science.
