Norene Peterson asked me to post the query below for her.
Is anyone aware of a website or an interactive lesson plan that teaches students effective ways to search the internet? I have seen several "evaluation" websites, but we are looking for a "searching" website. Thanks!

U.C. Berkeley Library has put together a wonderful tutorial about finding information on the Internet at http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/FindInfo.html The tutorial gives you information about how to search the Internet with a great deal of information about using search engines and the different families of search engines. I highly recommend this fine work.

Another great resource to check out is http://www.gcflearnfree.org/Tutorials/. They have tutorials not only for Internet searches but also for software, etc. You have to register to access the materials, but it is free.

The St. Paul Community Literacy Consortium has some very well-done lessons about the Internet and Computer for ESL : http://www.spclc.org/curriculum.html
Northwest Connecticut Community College offers these consumer related web quests:

I e-mailed Norene the following URLS which focus on web searching and are designed, or are suitable, for ABE and ESOL students. These URLS may also be of interest to others on NIFL-Technology:

In case it is helpful, your teachers might want to take a look at the lesson page at CESOL; http://tech.worlded.org/docs/cesol/lessons.htm

I'm not sure what level your students are at but you can take a look at The Learning Edge http://thewclc.ca/edge - and then click on Issue 3. That issue has an artilce called "Learning to use a search engine." The Learning Edge has been developed specifically for adult literacy learners.

Lindsay and others,
Great suggestion. This site has to be one of the very best out there for its full use of the technology of the Web to help learners in their langauge learning. If others are not familiar with it, please take a look it even if you are not interested in the "Learning to use a search engine."

Thanks Steve.
I should also mention a "sister" publication called The Northern Edge (www.nwt.literacy.ca/northernedge). The issues cover life in the far north - today's reality (high cost of energy, work related topics, climate change) and includes student voices and articles about traditional ways of life.
In Issue 3 there is an article called "Learning About Chat Rooms"
