Workforce Readiness Basic Skills Assessment
Question
I was wondering if anyone has ever considered
assessing Workforce clients for their skill level
before ever giving them any job referrals?
I am talking about the everyday person who just walks in the center to get help finding a job.

Assessment varies greatly from state to state, but I believe that it is
considered an intensive service under WIA. Self-administered vocational interest assessments are freely available. There are a number of computer-based assessments that a jobseeker has access to without necessarily being enrolled in WIA. This may be dependent, I think, on a workforce center contractor's skill and experience with selecting and making these assessments available.
Several states have moved/are moving towards a 'work readiness' credential that is a basic skills assessment. Unless the job description requires an assessment of a skill that is tied to a job function (e.g., typing test for administrative positions), I wonder what kind of assessment you might think is appropriate.

The Board is wanting to revamp the system. They think
it is a good idea to test every single person who
works in the workforce center, even the ES clients.
They want to do this on everyone who just comes in to
use the computers. They think that doing a work
assessment skill on people looking for jobs will give
them a better chance of finding a job. I don't work
for the Board.
I feel as if something like this is implemented that we will have less people coming to the center. Some people like to be assessed, but some people want to just come in and use the computers to do job search. However, I think they are going to make it a requirment of their RFP.
I was told by my boss to do research on all different kinds of assessments. Of course, I do what I am told to do, but I just feel that it can cause people not to want to come into the center.
What do you think?
