Delaware

I am truly amazed at the results from Delaware. As of this morning, our single point of contact, Joanne Heaphy, has received this information about the response sent to Congress:
Letters 1,854
Phone Calls 565
E-mails 565
We are also making contact with our military recruiters so they can register their concern through their channels because a reduction in adult education services will impact their recruitment efforts dramatically.
Circulating within our state is an "e-petition." This was a first for me. You literally sign your name to a petition online. It will be sent to its destination when the author of the petition is ready to have it sent on. This e-petition was begun by our DE statewide student association, OAASIS.
In addition, our adult learners are realizing the importance of the vote and have begun a registration campaign to vote. The President did not know the impact of his budget. My guess is that they are not registering to vote for him or those who support hurting the poor in this country.

As of yesterday, DE has generated the following:
Letters 3,176
Phone Calles 871
Emails 226
e-petition 121 (This is moving slower than I anticipated.)
I understand that Mike Castle has signed on to VALUE's Conference as a full sponsor. Much is attributed to the outpouring of letters. Congressman Castle is now and has been a supporter of Adult Education and Literacy.

Colleagues,
Here is a statement from a Delaware adult student association about their drive for signatures on an e-petition:
- We are the Organization of Adult Alumni and Students in Service (OAASIS), representing the state of Delaware. Adult Education has been a vital key in our society as workers, parents, and life long learners. We are starting this e-petition as a national voice for all concerned about the proposed budget cuts for Adult Education Programs. It is time that all students and alumni bond as one national voice. Your support is greatly appreciated.
OAASIS would like to have over 1000 signatures by next Monday, February 28. They will print the petition to take with them to the VALUE National Adult Learner Leadership Institute on March 7, 2005. There they will present it to members of Congress attending their lunch. They will also mail a copy to the White House.
If you would like to help them by signing their petition, follow this link:
