Just an addendum to what I wrote yesterday. I am using Facebook to connect with my Higher Ed Students and possible students to stay in touch and to get messages to them. They don't respond so well to phone, but do to Facebook messages. Only problem is that since it is blocked at work, I have to do it from home - sure extends my work day well into the evening - BUT it works!!!!

Jackie and Nell and others,

I've been a lurker and participated in the Facebook group only. Yesterday someone mentioned the difficulty of communicating with students by phone and a light went on. Students could excuse themselves from class (a requirement for us) via Facebook messages--or unfortunately, MySpace messages. But that means I'll have to join MySpace! There is a problem with "friending" students: I am so unhappy with the negative language and worse in their postings so I end up "hiding" them. Nell's lesson on privacy was good for me.

I will give Twitter a try over this next week--with the help of my more technically astute children on our vacation. I am afraid to get hooked on anything else. I waste too much time on Facebook.

YouTube--has potential for me. I saw a series called ozread from Val that looked promising--and I'm sure there are others.

Thanks to everyone! Mary Vanderkam (Family Literacy, South Bend, Indiana)
