Summary
Several themes (highlights) emerged from the NIFL-AALPD discussion regarding the qualities of a facilitator. Participants discussed the differences in the ‘nuts and bolts’ of facilitation (task-oriented facilitation) versus focusing on “relationship” i.e. the space to create a conducive environment for discussion, dialogue, and the construction of new knowledge. In discussing the role of the “script”, flexibility, and the “teachable moment,” an important quality emerged in that a facilitator needs to have a keen sensibility in balancing the agenda versus participants’ needs. Acknowledging participants’ constraints they work within presents the facilitator in a realistic light, and facilitators should also ‘walk the walk’: be realistic in presentation and content, and make explicit your experience teaching or directing at the program and classroom level.
Below are a list of themes. Click on "FacilitatorQualitiesList" to read about the qualities of a facilitator under each theme.
