COABE 2009 - Distance Education and Technology Strands
Free Online Tools for Teaching and Professional Development

Abstract: The goal of this workshop is to help participants think through the ways that they can use free online tools for classroom instruction and professional development. It will balance the presentation of information with time for hands-on work. The session will start with a review of some tools that are available (e.g., wikis, Yahoo groups, OfficeZilla, Twitter). Participants will be given a handout containing basic information about each of the tools, and the presenters will lead a walk-through of sample projects. Once they are familiar with the tools, participants will start exploring them first-hand. During this time the presenters will provide targeted support and participants will be encouraged to think about possible projects they could undertake using the tools. At the end the session, participants will share ideas they have for using the tools, and the presenters will suggest resources (listed on the handout) for those who wish to explore the tools in more depth. Explicitly connecting these tools to participants’ ongoing work makes it easier to integrate new information, and over the course of the workshop the participants move from becoming aware of the possibilities the tools create towards identifying specific projects they would like to take on.

Pre-Conference Comments/Questions: I'll be really interested to hear about educational uses of Twitter. Twitter has been quite an amazing phenomenon. Who knew that senators would be tweeting the president's speeches!? I just learned about a site called Twibes (that's Twitter Tribes) and I started one for adult education.
