From: Jackie A. Taylor
Date: Fri Jul 16 20:01:54 EDT 2010
Dear Colleagues:
Thank you (!) for a fantastic week's worth of discussions! I am very excited
and energized by it. (Video thanks! here: http://bit.ly/cBxpuB).
Even though the formal Week One discussions are drawing to a close, feel
free to keep the conversations going here on the PD List; we are resources
for one another. I will post a link to the full thread and discussion
summary here on the PD List within the next week.
We will continue using @TechPD to share resources and discussion on
integrating social media in teaching and PD.
Kathy Olesen-Tracey and Destiny Long have volunteered to lead the small
group, Lesson Repository for Integrating Social Media (thanks!). Kathy is
Instructional Designer / Project Coordinator at the Center for the
Application of Information Technologies, Western Illinois University;
Destiny Long is Project Coordinator at Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11,
Lewistown, Pennsylvania. If you've signed up for this small group, please
add their email addresses to your white list:
dlong at tiu11.org and ktracey at cait.org .
Deadline to sign up for small groups: Saturday, July 17, 2010
Sign up by visiting: http://www.doodle.com/32xrgr57asqc65p4
On Monday, July 19, we will begin our small groups.
- Your small group leader will email you with instructions. You may be asked to log into a forum to communicate with your small group members.
- Small groups will work together to learn the social media tool, help each other get acquainted with its features, and share ideas for its use in teaching or professional development.
- You may develop a product based on your learning goal. Examples might include (but not limited to) creating a YouTube channel for your class, embedding a photo slide show into a blog, creating a wiki, and so forth.
- Small group members will collaboratively write responses to these guiding questions:
- What were some successes you encountered learning and using this social media tool?
- What were some considerations or challenges you faced?
- What are your recommendations for using this tool in teaching or professional development?
- For what purpose(s) - if any - do you plan to use this tool in your practice?
August 2-6, 2010: Small groups will share their group responses on the
<http://www.nifl.gov/mailman/listinfo/Technology/> Technology or
<http://www.nifl.gov/mailman/listinfo/professionaldevelopment> Professional
Development List per the above prompts. We encourage all Technology and
Professional Development List subscribers to participate in these
culminating discussions.
Many thanks and have a great weekend!

Jackie,
I didn't participate in the discussion, but followed it. The project about favorite clothes was great. I will try the idea with my ESOL class. I gathered some great ideas for lessons using technology and also some ideas for retaining students via the web, social networks, text messaging, and iphones.
Thanks,

Hi to All,
My name is Marty Finsterbusch. I am the Executive Director of VALUEUSA. VALUEUSA is the only national organization in the USA run by past and present ABE students. Since this discussion has started, I have read all the email in this thread. WOW, I learned a lot. THANKS!
Currently, VALUEUSA is working on planning a social networking campaign as part of our social change initiative. Our objective is to engage people OUTSIDE the ABE system. We are looking for a couple of individuals with Social Media savvy to be on our planning committee. If you know anyone we should talk to or would be interested in helping with our plan, please send their name and contact information to office at valueusa.org. In advance, thank you for your help.
