Managed Enrollment
From LiteracyTentWiki
- A definition of "managed enrollment," taken from the CALPRO module on Managed Enrollment (authored by Sylvia Ramirez): "A Managed Enrollment policy offers several distinct advantages. According to this policy, a student may enter an instructional program only during specific enrollment periods, attend a specific class for the duration of the class term, continue in the same class for subsequent terms only by re-enrolling, and miss no more than a prescribed number of class sessions within a term." - A short description of how an ESL Program created a pilot study of managed enrollment (with thanks to Erik Jacobson and Mary Ann Corley for the link, posted to the CALPRO LPRPC discussion list on April 25, 2006).http://www.miracosta.cc.ca.us/Instruction/CommunityEducation/ESL/managedenrollment.htm
- "Our Even Start program required that a student could not miss class three times without calling. We also had a general rule about being in attendance for 75% of the time per quarter. We explained that we had a long waiting list and in fairness could not hold a slot for a non attending student. We promised the absent students that they would go to the top of the waiting list when they were ready to attend. My students would average between 200 and 300 hundred hours per year. (Honest to goodness!) As you can imagine they were able to accomplish numerous goals- We (like most of you) were very hesitant to enact and enforce these rules because there is such pressure to have many students and many hours. You ultimately have to decide where your limited resources with be best spent: on fewer students with many more results; or more students with fewer results. If you have less turn over, the students begin to develop a sense of “group”. They feel an obligation to the program but also to each other. They recommend friends and family that will fit with the group. They help each other and cheer each other on.
