Since so many states do not have a formal credentialing process, there is no reasonable assumption of common knowledge among adult educators. It only follows then that many Adult Education Cooperatives develop training in a vacuum on the assumption that they need to teach down because adult educators don’t have the fundamental background necessary to benefit from “professional” development (see MR#1&2).

PD generally follows a deficit model of teaching and learning. Again, usually, not always. But back to those questions: How often do you hear PD staff talking about what teachers need to do differently, etc?
