From: Taylor, Jackie jataylor at utk.edu

PD List Colleagues:

I would be _thrilled_ if each person who followed at least part of the discussion would answer one or more of the questions below. Please take a minute and jot down your feedback, and return it to me by either posting it to the list, or emailing me direct (jataylor at utk.edu).

1. Did you benefit from this discussion? If so, then in what ways?
2. What did you learn from the discussion, or what is at least one thing that you took away from the discussion? (It could be a recommendation, an idea or aspect of online/blended PD you hope to pursue, a resource you will explore, etc.)
3. What did you find valuable about either what was discussed, or the design/process by which it took place?
4. What did you like about the discussion (organization, process, format, etc) and what would you _change_ for next time? (consider aspects like (but not limited to) the week 1 discussion primer, the availability of synchronous chat office hours, Pod cast/online video archive, use of the wiki, facilitation, etc.)
5. If you attended the AALPD PreConference at COABE, was this a useful follow up to the PreConference? If so, then in what ways? If not, what suggestions do you have to improve the follow up for future

PreConferences?

Please return by June 1st. Thanks! :-) Jackie Taylor

I am taking away AVATAR and MOOGLE; not sure what they are, but will explore in my "spare time". Bonnita

OK Jackie,
I'll make time for this. First, a BIG thank-you to YOU. You model exemplary online style!

1. Did you benefit from this discussion? If so, then in what ways?

emphatic affirmative!

a) I copied snippets to ponder at later dates (and I do tend to review these saved collections I keep)
b) I forwarded a few posts to colleagues here at the learning center where I work
c) I am planning a presentation to our program director to review our center's pilot online learning course (for ESL students) and am planning to use some of the comments to gently nudge the idea of online PD (and perhaps my part in planning it?) to her.
d) ideas for self reflection -- and tools/questions/rubrics to consider as I pursue same
e) richly validating --
f) last, not least! -- reinforced the names of those I admire/appreciate learning from -- "names to know" -- in my mind (to stay alert for in the future)
g) pushed me closer to involvement in trying Tapped-In again -- [I had a negative first experience years ago, and yet since have heard so many folks whom I respect promote its value]
2. What did you learn from the discussion, or what is at least one thing that you took away from the discussion? (It could be a recommendation, an idea or aspect of online/blended PD you hope to pursue, a resource you will explore, etc.)

hmmm... determination to review the suggestions and ideas (many, from many participants) of ways to 'tease'/nudge colleagues into trying an aspect of online PD -- to really reinforce the "DIAT" (Do It Again Thoughtfully) approach and plan something highly relevant to a majority of others (not necessarily as strong a priority to me -- but to focus on others and their needs vs. my desire to share my enthusiam and successful experiences -- let others find their own way to meet their needs). Then, to plan and pursue --

3. What did you find valuable about either what was discussed, or the design/process by which it took place?

Your successful attempt to reach a few of the UPOs! (lurkers). The strong responses to the lurking question spoke volumes!

I remain fascinated by this aspect.

4. What did you like about the discussion (organization, process, format, etc) and what would you _change_ for next time? (consider aspects like (but not limited to) the week 1 discussion primer, the availability of synchronous chat office hours, Pod cast/online video archive, use of the wiki, facilitation, etc.)

I thought this was a most successful event -- many options, many acknowledgments of the realities and pros and cons and possibilities.

It is a RICH topic -- and still "new" to so many --

I didn't manage to fit in any of the podcast/tapped-in/synchronous chats, etc. -- but primarily because I've experienced them before -- there's a lot to absorb!

change: ??? no strong ideas today

again, thank YOU
Holly

I agree with almost everything Holly says; I'm new to this 'ESL' field; so am definitely a 'lurker'...I've had a small part time contract this year; teaching adult, beginner ESL...it's a lot harder than it looks (looking back in the day of my 'practicum' and volunteering as a tutor, where a 'teacher' kind of handed you what 'they wanted/thought you could do'....so I need all the help I can get in terms of PD.
Thanks a million.
P.S. I'd never heard of 'Second Life', now I'm signed up for their 'eletter' (I think)...and what a complicated place that is...
I'm going to use my Second Life name now;
Cheers

1. Did you benefit from this discussion? If so, then in what ways?

Absolutely! I learned so much about the variety of ways online materials can be presented (podcasting, more about Moodle, more about list serves) and how these have been integrated into PD.

2. What did you learn from the discussion, or what is at least one thing that you took away from the discussion? (It could be a recommendation, an idea or aspect of online/blended PD you hope to pursue, a resource you will

explore, etc.)

In looking at Jackie's facilitation, I would like to emulate her a bit more in leading my students through online discussions. I really appreciated her method for brining out the quieter participants (a.k.a. "lurkers" and "perchers") by intertwining the idea with self assessment.

3. What did you find valuable about either what was discussed, or the design/process by which it took place?

The email digests worked for me. I found them easy to follow and to access.

4. What did you like about the discussion (organization, process, format, etc) and what would you _change_ for next time? (consider aspects like (but not limited to) the week 1 discussion primer, the availability of synchronous chat office hours, Pod cast/online video archive, use of the wiki, facilitation, etc.)

I like the idea of synchronous chat office hours. The interface would be simple and effective. I am not a big fan of online video or voice archives as a replacement for textual information, but I can see how it might be a useful augmentation.

Thank you so much for facilitating this, Jackie, and thank you everyone for sharing your knowledge and experience!

1. Did you benefit from this discussion? If so, then in what ways?

I did benefit from the discussion as I learned that those on list have a great deal of information to share.

2. What did you learn from the discussion, or what is at least one thing that you took away from the discussion? (It could be a recommendation, an idea or aspect of online/blended PD you hope to pursue, a resource you will explore, etc.)

I felt that some on the list are still not convinced that online PD is the way to go. I teach PD online in several formats and also do face-to-face PD. I found that the online really aids those who work part-time in the field and allows them to use their time wisely to achieve PD goals.

3. What did you find valuable about either what was discussed, or the design/process by which it took place?

I liked the diversity of ideas and the "tell like it is" of some of the participants.

4. What did you like about the discussion (organization, process, format, etc) and what would you _change_ for next time? (consider aspects like (but not limited to) the week 1 discussion primer, the availability of synchronous chat office hours, Pod cast/online video archive, use of the wiki, facilitation, etc.)

It would be nice to have a synchronous discussion either through a chat or "tappedin". I have had chats for online classes and found them very useful, and once participants feel comfortable with the moderator, they express themselves freely.

[James, Kathryn] Dear Jackie and All,

1. Did you benefit from this discussion? If so, then in what ways?

[James, Kathryn] Yes, It was a real insight to hear/see what others thought who were outside the UK and from different contexts. Peoples perception on lurking, expectations of their participants regarding discussion.

2. What did you learn from the discussion, or what is at least one thing that you took away from the discussion? (It could be a recommendation, an idea or aspect of online/blended PD you hope to pursue, a resource you will explore, etc.)

[James, Kathryn] Similarities as well as differences apply. I am going to include advantages and disadvantages on the aspects of contribution, so for example while we do have expectations of participants to participate I will I think include something on the value of lurking (or listening perhaps as a better phrase)

4. What did you like about the discussion (organization, process, format, etc) and what would you _change_ for next time? (consider aspects like (but not limited to) the week 1 discussion primer, the availability of synchronous chat office hours, Pod cast/online video archive, use of the wiki, facilitation, etc.)

[James, Kathryn] I liked the openness of the discussion, the fact I would read and not feel obliged to contribute all the time, but really the diversity of the insight

5. If you attended the AALPD PreConference at COABE, was this a useful follow up to the PreConference? If so, then in what ways? If not, what suggestions do you have to improve the follow up for future PreConferences?

[James, Kathryn] Sorry no, did not attend.

[James, Kathryn]

Many thanks everyone

kathryn

1. Did you benefit from this discussion? If so, then in what ways?

Absolutely! Not because I was a guest contributor (who tended to lurk or perch more than contribute), but because the topic was so important to me.

2. What did you learn from the discussion, or what is at least one thing that you took away from the discussion? (It could be a recommendation, an idea or aspect of online/blended PD you hope to pursue, a resource you will explore, etc.)

I learned that there are a lot of people out there who are willing to help you with whatever Online PD project you're working on and that being open and honest with strangers (and some friends) oddly pays off. Do we feel more comfortable telling strangers our weaknesses? Is it like telling your hairdresser your wildest secrets?

3. What did you find valuable about either what was discussed, or the design/process by which it took place?

I valued Crystal's candor, Marian's ideas and suggestions and everyone's contributions. Especially concerning Moodle. I valued the acknowledgement that lurking is ok and I valued YOU Jackie, for demonstrating what the term "superb facilitator" really means. I don't know how you kept all of us on track, but you did and it seemed flawless!

4. What did you like about the discussion (organization, process, format, etc) and what would you _change_ for next time? (consider aspects like (but not limited to) the week 1 discussion primer, the availability of synchronous chat office hours, Pod cast/online video archive, use of the wiki, facilitation, etc.)

Everything... I liked the availability of office hours, although I didn't participate... I tend to try and balance my lwork with family and try not to work at night, but would have participated during the day.

5. If you attended the AALPD PreConference at COABE, was this a useful follow up to the PreConference? If so, then in what ways? If not, what suggestions do you have to improve the follow up for future PreConferences?

You ROCK Jackie!

1. Did you benefit from this discussion? If so, then in what ways?

Yes, I did, because there were so many resources of which I'm not aware since I've been out of the "blended classroom" setting in adult ed for some years. I can see how these formats could benefit my own class instruction to reach different learning styles, but I'm not sure what my university will support, such as blogs.

2. What did you learn from the discussion, or what is at least one thing that you took away from the discussion? (It could be a recommendation, an idea or aspect of online/blended PD you hope to pursue, a resource you will explore, etc.)

That I can go back to my days of explicitly teaching integrated technology/adult ed/employability skills, and extend them to my current classrooms, most of which are supposed to be "smart," i.e. with one computer and projectors. The university's attempt at a "blended" freshman seminar last year was flawed not just because the website they were supposed to access for career/skills assesssment, reflection et al. was badly designed, but most of them because they couldn't remember their passwords to the campus e-mail accounts, you know, the one they supposedly would never forget so they didn't bother to write it down, nor could they remember the address for on-campus and off-campus e-mail servers. So the supposedly computer literate generation can only access the e-mail and websites they've used for years because their home computer is set up that way, nor are they as computer literate in overall skills so the digital divide isn't just between the haves and have nots, it's between those who have been taught applications and those who have not.

3. What did you find valuable about either what was discussed, or the design/process by which it took place?

I liked how it branched out into so many different areas, but I confess I didn't have the time to follow the lihnks/ chats/webcasts etc. I've saved them for future reference.

Subject: [ProfessionalDevelopment 1234] BIG Thank You!!
From: Taylor, Jackie jataylor at utk.edu
Date: Tue May 22 11:25:45 EDT 2007

PD List Colleagues:

I am _very_ grateful to our guests for joining us these past two weeks to explore the issues in online and blended professional development. Thank you for offering invaluable insights, and sharing a TON of resources! A lot goes on behind the scenes in preparing for list discussions, and I appreciate your valuable time to help us explore the issues in greater depth.

A special thanks to our AALPD Panelists who allowed us to video the preconference panel discussion and make it available to the PD List as a Pod cast and online video archive; to Dave Kring for his work in making the video of the panel discussion; and to Tim for his time preparing it for our viewing. Tim will be sharing more with us regarding the Pod cast and the case study to which he referred last week, so stay tuned.

A Big Thanks also to the TESOL EVO Team for bringing the synchronous component to our discussions, and to guests who kept office hours at Tapped In. I have found the 'real time' opportunities to be invaluable each time I was available to participate.

As a moderator and an online learner, I especially appreciate the opportunity to interact with all of _you_. Thank you for your enthusiasm and rich exchange of ideas. It will stay with me.

Upcoming Discussions:

1) July 9-13: Cristine Smith and Marilyn Gillespie will join us to discuss their chapter on research in professional development and teacher change, found in the recent publication of Review of Adult Learning and Literacy, Volume 7. http://www.ncsall.net/index.php?id=1175
2) September 2007: Quality Standards for Adult Literacy Professional Development - This time is reserved to discuss the draft of the AALPD quality standards for adult literacy professional development.

I will be posting suggestions for follow up to _this_ discussion soon. I hope you will stay with us; I have enjoyed our time together immensely. This formally ends our guest discussion, but please feel free to continue exploring the topics - that's what our online community is about.

Most Appreciatively,

Jackie Taylor, PD List Moderator, jataylor at utk.edu
