Hi Mary and Jackie,
I am looking at taking this one step further. I am looking at creating E-Communities. They are one step above Learning Communities. My focus is on helping businesses, which will help the community in the end. I just finished a short blog post on an E-Community being good for business:
http://alphacomputer.ca/wpactc/2010/07/an-e-community-is-good-for-business/
It has great possibilities. I believe it is the way ahead. Let me know what you think?
Regards,
Jeff Brown

Hi Jeff, All,
Jeff, thanks for sharing your blog article! I've been aware of your site and
some of the resources you have available. :-) If I may ask you a question,
what do you see as the difference between Learning Communities and
E-Communities in the context of business? How, for example, might an
E-Community showcase its business to the world? And do you mean one step
above or beyond. For example, do you mean that the E-Community is a learning
community of entrepreneurs that also builds a loyal customer base? And what
comparisons or conclusions might be drawn for adult education programs, such
as Duren mentioned earlier, implications for adult learner recruitment,
retention?
Thanks.Jackie

LingQ is an example of an e-learning community that combines a language
learning methodology with a variety of opportunities for mutual learning
amongst people with different native languages. The learning content is
mostly contributed by members, some of whom are in their turn language
learning websites or even schools, who can advertize their services by
providing interesting learner content for other members of the community.
All content consists of audio and text and is downloadable free of charge.
Recently LingQ launched Korean, and a number of Korean language learning
sites have been contributing content to our Koran Library and as a means of
attracting readers to their own sites.
The rule of iTunes is also important. All of the content which members
create, and is therefore free of copyright, can be put on iTunes via RSS
feed. These content items are also Twittered by some members. In addition
LingQ has two iPhone, iPod touch apps that are offered free of charge at
iTunes, and that is largely for the purpose of increasing awareness of the
site.

Hi Jackie,
An E-Community first of all has to be a community that focuses on literacy;
especially computer literacy. An E-Community goes one step further, than a
Learning community, to create a two way connection to the world. This
connection starts off as business and then brings in benefits for the
community later. I have been talking with others and putting this idea of
the E-Community together. I see, in the future, communities that are very
much connected and engaging with other parts of the world. This will
greatly help the cause of literacy since it will cause people to use
applications like Facebook, where they will have to type in their comments.
The desire to connect with others will cause people to want to be more
literate.
An E-Community goes beyond a Learning Community in that it takes learning
and engagement to a whole new level. It is more than entrepreneurs. It is
a whole community working together to create a better community first of all
through business. An E-Community showcases local businesses to the world.
But it also draws outside businesses to locate to this new type of
community. An E-Community is the way of the future, I believe. I updated
my blog with a further post on the E-Community:

Let me know what you think?
Thanks,
