PD Policies and Guidelines:
In Ohio, all paid ABLE staff are required to submit an Individual Professional
Development Plan, and each ABLE program must submit a summarized Program
Professional Development Plan:
http://www.ode.state.oh.us/ctae/adult/able/ProfDev.asp
These plans are supposed to be driven by PD needs (they may choose to do the
Self-Assessment which can be viewed at the above link).
Financial support is provided to all paid ABLE staff:
For all staff paid by ABLE less than 7 hours/week - each is eligible for one
stipend. For those paid 7 hours plus/week - each is eligible for two
stipends. It is proposed that this hourly requirement change to less-than-10
and 10-or-more next year. Currently, stipends are $70 for a full-day
activity, $35 for a half-day activity and $35 for alternative delivery
activity.
In addition, for paid ABLE staff working in ABLE for more than a year - each
is eligible for reimbursement of a state conference up to $250. We encourage
this support be used for attendance at our Annual Conference of the Ohio
Association for Adult and Continuing Education or Annual Ohio TESOL Conference.
OR - if these same paid ABLE staff have worked in ABLE for 3 or more years,
they are eligible for reimbursement of one national conference up to $500 and
must submit an article to our statewide online newsletter on something he/she
learned.
ABLE staff working more than 1 year in ABLE and more than 7 hours/week are
also eligible for a reimbursement of college course credit - up to $250, if
the course is related to his/her ABLE work and a final grade is submitted with
the reimbursement request.
So, in summary, paid ABLE staff can receive 1 or 2 stipends for their
attendance at PD activities, depending on the number of hours they work - OR -
they can receive either a conference reimbursement or tuition reimbursement.
Even though there are limited funds to support PD through the Resource Center
Network, all programs are strongly encouraged to support additional PD for
their staff through their individual program budgets.
All PD offerings through the ABLE Resource Center Network are free to paid
ABLE staff. Non-ABLE people may attend, space permitting. All ABLE staff are
encouraged to take advantage PD activities outside of the Resource Center
Network if such activities better meet their identified needs.
PD activities that are supported by Ohio ABLE include: Workshops sponsored by
the Ohio ABLE Resource Center Network, Action Research, Presentations,
Resource Center Visit, Participation in Special Projects, Local workshops
supported by your local Resource Center, Conferences, Focus/Study Groups,
Classroom Visits and Peer Observations, Involvement in Professional
Organizations and Coaching.
ABLE staff are only eligible for financial support of PD if it's listed on
his/her Individual Professional Development Plan and is connected to their
identified needs.
Required PD activities are also financially supported with stipends and are
provided in addition to the above support. Currently, we have the following
required PD activities:
- 1. New Teacher Orientation: required for all paid ABLE staff withing first
two years of work in ABLE. It's a Part 1: online component, and Part 2: face-to-face workshop. $105 stipend is available once completed.
- 2. Learning Disabilities Video Training Series: required for all staff paid
by ABLE. Parts 1 and 2, online video; Part 3: face-to-face workshop.
- 3. New Director Orientation: required for all new program directors/
coordinators within first year of work in ABLE.
No ABLE staff are eligible for financial support for attendance at PD
activities if he/she is being paid by their program.
Well, that's the easiest I could describe a complex situation. If you have
question, please ask.
