Rhode Island

Rhode Island finally has an advantage to being small... we have called all programs, sent out a sample letter, talking points, information sheet, and suggestions for sending emails, letters, and making calls. We will be following up with additional calls and encouraging fellow adult educators as we meet them throughout the week (very small indeed!)

We have also called the education staffers for our 4 congressmen to ask what they might need from us (statistics etc.) All 4 are supporters of adult education, some more proactively than others. And we are working on our Republican Governor to see what he can do for the cause. He gets the importance of adult literacy (was once a math teacher) and generously put $2.5 mill for adult ed in his budget this year.

And...the state Economic Policy Council is mulling over how they might get businesses on board. The Council took on literacy as an important issue in workforce development this year and are supporting the EFF Workforce Readiness Certificate in RI.

And, one of the first --and best -- adult literacy advocacy web sites is made in Rhode Island at Literacy Resources/Rhode Island. You'll find it at
