Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) CTB/McGraw-Hill (800) 538-9547
Purpose: To measure reading, writing, and mathematics achievement.
Approach: Norm-referenced, structural test.
Target Population: Normed on 6,300 adults in 223 institutions across the country including adult basic education learners, adult offenders, juvenile offenders, and vocational/technical school enrollees.
Administration: Can be administered individually or to groups.
Test length/constraints: The entire instrument takes 4.5 hours to administer. It is a timed test. (The survey takes 1.5 hours; the battery takes 3 hours.)
Comments: The TABE test is designed to be used in conjunction with ABE/GED classes, in order to determine a student's initial functioning level, or grade equivalent, upon entry into the program. The complete battery is a series of 5 tests at 5 levels that yield both normed scores, and skill and outcome performance scores. The 5 levels cover grade-equivalent skill levels 1.6 through 12.9. There are 2 forms of each level. There is also a TABE Work-Related Problem Solving component, called Forms 7 and 8, and these can be administered either in conjunction with the TABE, or separately. Forms 7 and 8 are meant to provide employers, professional trainers, and educators with an assessment of how learners handle various problem-solving tasks. There is also a Spanish TABE which is designed for assessing basic reading, math, and language skills in adults whose primary language is Spanish. The instrument is not suitable for learners in beginning–level adult ESOL. Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assesses basic reading, mathematics, and language skills. The assessment yields objective-mastery information for skills usually learned in Grades 1-12, and provides percentile and scale scores. Grade equivalent scores are also provided for TABE. Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) assesses basic reading, mathematics, and language skills.
