United States

  • Appalachian State University, Boone, NC has one of the oldest degree programs in Higher Education (started in the late 60s). The Higher Education program offers two graduate degree programs: Master of Arts and the Educational Specialist. Under those programs are three concentrations: Adult & Developmental Education, Teaching, and Community College and University Leadership. This is one of the only programs in the U.S. combining Adult and Developmental Education. The concentration in Adult and Developmental Education prepares educators for professional roles in adult basic skills, literacy, developmental education, learning assistance, student support services, TRIO programs, and other related educational programs for adult learners in post-secondary education.The Ed.S. degree is for individuals who have earned a Masters Degree and are interested in advancing their careers, expanding their professional area, or preparing for a doctoral program. Graduates of these degree programs find positions as directors, coordinators, learning specialists, advisers, and educators in a variety of program areas serving adult learners. Two summer institutes are offered at ASU which can be applied to either degree program.   • "'Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado Master of Education with a Specialization in Adult Education and Training is one of the longest running programs in the School of Education at CSU. Over 25 years old, the fully online version was launched 13 years ago. Individuals working in ABE/GED/ESL, community college instructors, health care educators, non-profit trainers, corporate trainers, emergency services, and many more fields collaborate to gain knowledge and skills in adult learning, learning theory, instructional design, and options such as assessment, learning technologies, and learning transfer. We have partnered with the Colorado Department of Educataion and our courses count toward the Literacy Instruction Authorization required for employees in ABE/GED/ESL in the state of Colorado.   • Hamline University, St Paul, MN has a long history of working with teachers of adult English Language Learners, including one of the only options for an Adult ESL certificate available completely online. Hamline School of Education offers both face-to-face and online options for the following:

  • Kansas State University
    • Online Master's degree in Adult and Continuing Education.Begins in the summer of 2010.   • Long Island University – Hudson Graduate Center Certificate in TESOL – Adult/Post-Secondary 18 credits. Competence in a language other than English is required. Practice teaching: 40 hours of observation and 250 hours of practice teaching. 2-3 semesters. Students may be full-time or part-time and may begin the program at the beginning of any semester. Some courses offered online or blended. The institution requires a GPA of 2.75 Courses Offered: 2nd Language Acquisition; Fundamentals of Linguistics; English and Its Structure; Methods of Teaching Adult ESL/EFL; Field Experience: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages Seminar and Student/Supervised Teaching in TESOL.   • Morehead State University’s Master of Arts degree in Adult and Higher Education. The Department of Foundational and Graduate Studies at Morehead State University offers a Master of Arts degree in Adult and Higher Education. The 30 hours required for completion of the degree can be taken entirely online. With courses in Human Development in Adulthood and Developmental Education for Adults, the degree also offers the flexibility of an area of specialization (nine credit hours) that can be tailored by the student as guided and approved by the academic advisor. One area of specialization, Community College, is offered directly through the Adult and Higher Education program, with preapproved area of specializations in Counseling, offered by the same (Foundational and Graduate Studies in Education) department and Business Education, offered by the Department of Management, Marketing and Real Estate.   • Pennsylvania State University Online M.Ed. program in Adult Education and Online Family Literacy Certificate.   • Seattle University, College of Education, Adult Education and Training Program MA, MEd. Students may choose to complete a Master’s of Education or a Master’s of Art. Both require the same number of credits, an internship, and completion of the Comprehensive Examination. The Master’s of Art option requires completion of a graduate project while the Master’s of Education option allows students to complete an additional elective.   • Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas. The Adult Education program is housed in the Department of Educational Administration and Human Resource Development. The Mission Statement of the Adult Education program captures well the intent and purpose of our program, which is to develop adult education practitioners who are critically reflective, student-centered, and committed to social justice.
    To make the program accessible, most of the courses are scheduled for fall and spring semesters on a five-weekend format with web-based instruction in between; two courses will be offered each semester, one on Fridays and the other on Saturdays, each in a 6-hour block. Some electives will be available by TTVN (a compressed-video system) to sites in Houston and San Antonio; a few will be on-line courses. It is possible to begin the program in any semester.

  • University of Tennessee Adult Education Program - Master's & PhD degrees with concentrations/specializations in Adult Education. The adult education concentration at The University of Tennessee is designed to serve the needs of individuals who work with adult learners in diverse settings. The program offers two degrees: Master of Science (M.S.) in Educational Psychology with a concentration in Adult Education (designed for individuals who seek to provide professional leadership in the education of adults - emphasis is on the development of a common core of knowledge and skills in adult education) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Education with a concentration in educational Psychology and a specialization in Adult Education (focus on developing current and future leaders and researchers in the study and practice of adult education - in schools, mental health centers, businesses, community agencies, and other programs devoted to personal and professional development).   • VCU Adult Literacy Certificate Program Virginia Commonwealth University has established a five course graduate level on-line course in adult literacy. The program covers foundations of literacy, adult learning theory, assessment and instruction, curriculum design. The five 3-credit hour courses focus are offered sequentially using the on-line Blackboard platform. Because VDCE serves as registrar, we are able to offer these graduate level courses for approximately $550 per course, regardless of state or country of residence. Participants in possession of a Virginia State teacher’s license will earn an endorsement from the Virginia State Department of Education upon successful completion of the program. However, anyone with a bachelor’s degree or higher is eligible to take the courses, earn 15 graduate credits and a certificate from VCU. Descriptions of the five courses and contact information follow:
    • ADLT 601 - The Adult Learner: This course provides a comprehensive overview of learning in adulthood, beginning with the historical development of the field and its philosophical underpinnings. Numerous theoretical perspectives of adult learning are examined, including: behavioral, cognitive, humanist, social, and constructivist, as well as critical theories as applied to feminism, social justice, and emancipatory learning. The psychological, social, and physical attributes of adult development are addressed, as well as how adults learn across the lifespan.
    • ADLT 602 - Curriculum Development for Adult Education: This course is designed to provide an overview of research and practice related to effective curriculum design. The course introduces models of program planning, management, and evaluation appropriate for a variety of adult learners including those requiring accommodations for disability, literacy, non-native English speaking ability, and multicultural backgrounds. Students can be expected to gain an appreciation for alternative voices and some practical ways of going about the business of program planning, management and evaluation. Participants will be introduced to these techniques through readings from various websites, online documents, and the required textbook, which can be purchased through online vendors.
    • READ 602 – Teaching Adult Literacy and Numeracy: Course participants will design and conduct a multi-dimensional assessment protocol. Drawing on this experience and on a range of primary source writings, the participants will reflect critically on advantages, disadvantages and general applicability of major learning stances (especially positivism, social-constructivism), and approaches to adult literacy. Educators will be able to articulate the attributes of a range of instructional models, programs, and materials, and to select, adopt, or design them prudently, based on the needs, strengths, and interests of their learners.
    • ADLT 607 - Teaching Writing to Adults: This course is designed to provide an overview of the practices, research, and application of instructional techniques for effectively working with adult learners in the writing classroom. Participants will be introduced to these techniques through readings from various websites, online documents, and the required textbook, which can be purchased through online vendors.
    • ADLT 608 - Adult Education Practicum: A 120-hour field-based experience in Adult Education, the Practicum is a capstone experience for Adult Education students. The field-based practicum is an integral component of the professional preparation of adult education educators. The practicum is supervised by a Field Supervisor in the adult education program in which the field-based experience is being conducted, under the guidance of an adult education advisor at the School of Education at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Certificate in Literacy Instruction

The 20 credit Certificate in Literacy Instruction prepares students to work closely with individuals and communities to promote literacies for everyday life learning, education, and social and economic participation. The core courses offer a wide range of theoretical concepts and practical skills relevant to working in adult literacy, family literacy, youth literacy and home-school relations. Courses are available online and in face to face formats.

Core courses include:

  • LIteracy, Education and Culture: This is an orientation to the place of literacy in contemporary society, perspectives on the study and teaching of literacy, literacy and inequality, literacy policy and changing literacies in the context of globalization and digital cultures. Students complete group and individual projects that bring them into contact with adult learning groups, and promote critical reflection. (available online)
  • Aboriginal Languages, Education and Culture: Literacy work in BC involves a deep and sound understanding of the cultural, linguistic and educational histories of Aboriginal peoples, contemporary cultural resources for learning indigenous and mainstream literacies, and approaches to learning in Aboriginal settings.
  • Contemporary Approaches to Literacy Instruction: This course is designed to provide students with a broad repertoire of instructional approaches relevant to working with new adult readers and writers. The repertoire includes phonological and phonemic strategies geared to fluency, emergent writing, constructivist and skils-based orientations, the incorporation of digital and multimodal learning strategies and learning difficulties.
  • Practicum: The literacy practicum is a 60-hour practicum designed to offer the practicum candidate authentic work experience in literacy education settings.

    • Master of Adult Education - http://www.stfx.ca/academic/adulted The Master of Adult Education program with optional specialization in Community Development is Canada's first self-directed master's program offered through distance education. Since 1970, the curriculum has evolved from a traditional format consisting of 10 courses to one that is experiential and individualized wherein students design and implement their own content curriculum.

The program has a professional development focus and is of interest to candidates from a wide variety of career areas such as community development, adult basic literacy, aboriginal education, human resource development, vocational education, community health promotion, and post-secondary education.

    • Master of Arts in Adult Literacy, Lifelong Learning and Development: International Perspectives - http://www.uea.ac.uk/edu/courses This MA degree is intended for those working in adult education and basic literacy, particularly in international and community development programmes. The Masters programme consists of two taught courses and a dissertation.
    • We welcome people working in policy, planning and evaluation roles, as well as teachers from colleges, schools and literacy progammes. Whilst we envisage that many of our students will be working in developing countries, the course is also appropriate for those working in the UK in the field of adult education and lifelong learning who are interested in developing an international perspective on their work.
    • Students will follow a core programme around the changing concepts and approaches in the areas of adult literacy, non-formal education and lifelong learning. In parallel, students will choose specialist topics relevant to their own needs and interests which they are encouraged to explore through supervised qualitative enquiry.
    • Students will gain an understanding of how adult education policy and programmes relate to international development policy objectives, through policy-focused analysis of the impact of literacy on development indicators such as health, income and political participation.
    • This MA course will also offer the opportunity to explore the relationship between adult literacy, lifelong learning and social change, including gender relations.
