COABE 2009 - Distance Education and Technology Strands
Using Classroom Video for Professional Development
Abstract: We will review short, adult education classroom videos whose design in based on adult education theory, research, state content standards and/or best practices. We will discuss them in small groups.
Presentation Content and Main Points
Participants will look through a "video window" into two other adult educators' classrooms, one ABE and one ESOL. They will hear teachers talk about a lesson, look at the teacher's lesson plan, and see part of the lesson. The lessons are all based on adult education theory, research, state content standards and/or best practices.
The objectives for participants in this session include:
1) Experience students and a teacher in actual lessons in others' classrooms (a high priority for most teachers);
2) Describe the teacher's objectives for the lesson;
3) Describe the methods used;
4) Evaluate the class;
5) Compare the observed practices with one's own teaching practices; and
6) Consider trying out a practice that was observed.
The session will be based on the Media Library of Teaching Skills (MLoTS), a free web site with videos of adult education classrooms. http://mlots.org
There are two target audiences: instructors and professional developers
Presenter: David J. Rosen, President - Media Library of Teaching Skills
Presenter's Comments:
Teachers tell me -- all the time -- that the professional development they need most is to see what other teachers are doing; yet the logistics of such a visit are often so difficult, it rarely happens. So we have made short videos of classroom instruction. We'll look at some of these and discuss them. Later, participants can view the same (free) videos -- and many more -- with colleagues in their state or at their own program. We will also discuss how the videos are made, and how your state can provide training for teachers to make videos like these.

- Is there a way to have comments or asynchronous discussions around the videos? I didn't see any.
