COABE 2009 - Distance Education and Technology Strands
Using Moodle: An Online Course Management System

Abstract: Moodle is an open-source course management system to help you create an online or hybrid course. In this ‘walk-through’ you will learn about the many features available including assignments, quizzes, surveys, and more. Discussion on the variety of uses for Moodle in the ABE/ASE/GED adult education environment is encouraged.

Presenter: Penny S. Pearson, Project Specialist Outreach and Technical Assistance Network (California)

Presenter's Comments: Moodle is gaining ground against other course management systems like BlackBoard, Desire2Learn, and AngelFire. Moodle offers so much, teachers are often faced with a dilemma on exactly WHAT do offer in terms of resources and activities. This workshop is meant to give a general overview of Moodle and present educators just enough information to set them off on their own exploration of this tool as a means to improve delivery of curriculum either in an online or hybrid course. [Hybrid meaning the students meet together face-to-face for a certain period of time, say once a week.]

Pre-Conference Comments/Questions: As a teacher whose university is using Blackboard, I can say that I'm not particularly happy with it - it does the job, but at a basic level. It will be good to hear how people are using Moodle. Will you be presenting some examples of classes that have used Moodle really successfully? (Erik)

To me, the biggest advantage of Moodle is the price - free! It seems like every course management system has its limitations, maybe because it is designed to track student time and activities, which adds constraints. On the other hand, it's great to have a bunch of tools that work together all in one place. I'm curious to hear from other Moodle users. (Marian)
