RESPONSES FROM PARTICIPANTS
Reports:
Hello! This is Angela weighing in... I've been involved with WE LEARN's reading circles in Boston and as a graduate student at UMass, and attending this conference was an amazing, inspiring, and very educational experience for me! Throughout the gathering, I asked several women what they thought/how they felt about participating in the gathering, and made notes of their impromptu responses shared in the sessions. Here's a few that show what a powerful event this was for some of the adult learners in attendance:
One woman remarked, “I feel so good today. I feel so strong now. It’s like I’ve been in a prison and someone just opened the doors.”
---
Another, "I had always felt so alone, always thought I was the only one with these problems. I realized today how we all share some problems, that I'm not alone. But even better I think we also all have a passion to overcome them. I know we will. I've met so many positive women today that make me believe it."
---
"You have to build a network, always get people in your life that are doing a few steps better than you, people who will show you what you can reach for, people who will pull you forward and cheer you on. I gotta stay away from people who try to pull me back. We've gotta build a good network of women who will keep moving us all to the next level. That's what this conference is all about. We are making that network here."
---
"I thought there were no resources really available for women who want to make a change, who want to learn literacy. I knew learning literacy would make me feel better, make my life better. I found the resources I was looking for here. It feels so good. I have a lot of hope."
---
"All of these workshops and meetings and speakers are awesome. I have never, ever been to anything like this. It makes me feel like my ideas are important and that I can do well, and I can help other women going through their eduction too. We are all making our lives better and we are all here for each other. I feel so glad I got involved. I want to go home and tell my friends they should be involved too."
---
"This meeting was great! It made me feel good about myself and my ability to get an education and take action."
