The curriculum is specifically designed for work readiness and is used by those preparing for work for the first time and also by incumbent workers, including those in company-sponsored workplace basic skills classes. Career Ready 101 is a component of KeyTrain©, an online computer-assisted program developed for North Americans (high school and adults) who need skills and knowledge to prepare for and pass the ACT, Inc., Work Keys National Career Readiness Certificate assessment that is used by some employers in hiring new employees. The program is also used internationally in Africa and Latin America.
  • Communicating at Work: Building a Successful Team http://www.acp-sc.org/resources/instruction This activity is part of the Workforce Education Learning Activities Bank, an interactive resource of work-related basic skills lessons for use by instructors in the workplace or in traditional adult education programs and by adult learners. All activities within the bank are aligned with the appropriate Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS), Equipped for the Future (EFF), and GED skills and standards. In a game-based format, students develop a heightened awareness of the significance in teamwork between co-workers and discover skills which facilitate teamwork. In the critical-thinking and reflection component of the activity, participants will respond to discussion prompts requiring transfer of knowledge to a workplace setting. This activity can be used on its own or as a follow-up to another activity in the series, “Communicating at Work: Five Basic Human Needs,” which can be located at http://slincs.coe.utk.edu/gtelab/learning_activities/19evej.html.

It includes a teacher guide, a student workbook, and ancillary materials including worksheets and audio files. The structure of the text enables facilitators to teach workplace skills while teaching literacy skills.

This resource includes a teacher’s guide, a student workbook, and ancillary materials including student worksheets and links to additional resources. The writing skill material for this project is organized into four units with each unit featuring targeted EFF Work Readiness Profile skills. Unit 1 focuses on the ability to “Work with Others and Serve Clients”; Unit 2 is organized around various aspects of workplace “Responsibility”; Unit 3 emphasizes workplace conduct and scenarios are placed in the context of “Monitor and Correct Performance”; Unit 4 features scenarios on personal integrity and problem solving as well as “Use of Technology and Systems”.
