Basic education/ESOL

This topic covers a broad array of adult basic education and literacy programs for English and non-English speakers. These skills serve people in all parts of their life, not just work. These programs often include math and increasingly computers.

Adult literacy materials and tools

These resources include classroom materials, curricula, and similar materials.

Adult literacy methods and strategies

Resources on methods and strategies for teaching and learning.

Adult literacy/ESOL portals, networks and websites

This field has well developed associations, networks, open e-mail discussion groups, and web portals. Resources on these are included in this section.

Adult math methods and resources

Teaching math to adults often focuses on how math is used--for work, keeping a checking account, or managing household finances. These resources include both curricula and strategies.

Computer literacy for adults

Workers recognize that computer literacy has to some extent become a requirement for all employment as well as necessary to feel competent in modern day-to-day life. Unlike literacy, there is no stigma attached to not yet knowing computers. As a result of both factors, interest in computer classes is often high. These are links to resources for teaching very basic computer use.

ESOL materials and tools

The growth in immigrant populations is spurring the development of new materials. These resources have been identified by practitioners as of interest.

ESOL methods and strategies

Resources on how to teach English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).

GED

This section includes resources relevant to workforce development that are access points to information on GED issues and programs.

Professional development

Staff development is particularly critical in the present situation of no required credentials or standards for basic education teachers and teachers often working in small programs with little supervision or support. This section provide links to staff development resources. The networks and portals also provide connections to peer-to-peer support.
