Subject: [PD 5056] Reflection on Using YouTube

Hello, everyone!
These are my personal reflections on using YouTube. You can see many ideas our "Using Social Media Tools" small group came up with for using YouTube at http://smpd-abe.ning.com/forum/topics/uses-of-youtube-in-the-field.
- What were some successes you encountered learning and using this social media tool?
It's easy to use. Students already know it and frequently visit the site. It's easy to share video (create an account, upload, share via email or by posting a link or embedding on a Web page).
- What were some considerations or challenges you faced?
Length of video you can upload is limited. Some videos there one day but gone the next. Can't download without using another site or software. It takes a lot of time to find good content that is appropriate for classroom use. Better to do a general search for video content on Google or use an education-based video-sharing site (TeacherTube, for example).
- What are your recommendations for using this tool in teaching or professional development?
Proceed with caution because of the considerations / challenges described above. If you do student video projects, make sure that they sign a waiver giving permission to let you upload their content.
- For what purpose(s) – if any – do you plan to use this tool in your practice?
I already used it frequently but some of the video I have saved and use in my instruction is getting stale. I'd like to continue to use video on YouTube to introduce my students to the many interesting aspects of American culture and give them exposure to the English language as native speakers in this country use it (descriptive v. prescriptive grammar, idioms, accents, reductions, etc.). Video is a great way to activate schemata before a reading, practice discreet listening, and spark discussion.
